This class is designed to encourage students to grow as they explore their own creativity in the context of some exciting ceramic history and fundamental ceramic techniques, such as; coil building, slab building, pinch pots, scoring and slipping, slump molding, and basic surface design.
In the first 3rd of the session students will learn a new skill and project each week followed by some free form exploration of that skill along with ideas for how to incorporate all their new techniques together to build their own unique designs. Around week 6 students will learn how to glaze their work and get to celebrate finished pieces for the first time in a positive and reflective class “critique” that will inform their work moving forward and help they enjoy the process of glazing even more in following sessions.
From there we will start to focus on exploring more advanced techniques to build the student’s surface design and sculptural skills. Learning techniques like clay inlay, slip trailing and marbling, texture rolling and stamp making. While this is mostly a handbuilding class if students are interested in trying the wheel we will schedule a limited amount of wheel exploration time as well.
The idea of this class is to teach students how to feel confident in their own voice as a ceramics artist and have the fundamental knowledge to see their imaginations come to life. Due to the small class size (8 Students), we will have the time to support each student and the flexibility to meet their individual interests.
Students will be encouraged to keep a sketch book.
All clay and tools will be supplied.
There will be time for an after school snack upon arrival (student’s should bring this, if needed we can supply a snack for a small fee)
